UERM inaugurates Philippine school of prosthetics and orthotics

The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc (UERMMMCI) recently inaugurated the Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (PSPO) at its campus in Quezon City.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting was headlined by the Guest of honor Ms. Viel Aquino-Dee , Tan Yan Kee Trustee Ms. Shirley Tan Chua, UERMMMCI President Dr. Romeo Divinagracia and UERMMMCI- CAReS Dean Dr. Raquel Cabazor.

PSPO is part of an international network with Cambodia Trust and Nippon Foundation as partners. These institutions’ main goal is to empower PWDs in every aspect of their lives—especially those who are poor, unemployed or those who do not have any access to mobility devices. Cambodia Trust and Nippon Foundation found UERM’s physical therapy and rehabilitation program to be of perfect fit and best matched their vision and philosophy. A $7 million grant for UERM’s PSPO curriculum, spread over 10 years through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), was signed in October 2010.

PSPO, which is under the UERMMMCI College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences, is currently accepting applications for the Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics degree.

The degree program includes rigid and intensive practice and hands-on training on Prosthetics and Orthotics with subjects including Anatomy and Physiology, Technical Engineering, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Prosthetics and Orthotics, to name a few. Students will be mentored by an international faculty composed of experts in prosthetics/orthotics education from Canada, Japan, Sri Lanka and Cambodia. Some of PSPO’s future local faculties are now abroad for hands-on training and skills acquisition specific to this transfer of technology.

Dubai

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Orthopadie Technik Berlin (OTB), recently signed an agreement to cooperate in the field of orthotics and prosthetics.

The agreement is the first-of-its-kind between a government entity and the private sector in the Middle-East region.

It was signed by Dr Shawqi Khoori, CEO of Rashid Hospital and Karl Schmidt, general manager, OTB, in the presence of senior DHA officials including Khalid Al Sheikh Mubarak, the deputy director-general of the DHA.

As per the agreement, Orthopadie Technik will set up a state-of-the-art retail store in the premises of Rashid Hospital which will have on display high-quality products to assist those with special needs.

The store will provide all kind of prosthetics for those with amputations as well as various kinds of equipment to provide support to adults and children suffering from any kind of disability, a statement from DHA said.

Moreover, the company will also provide experienced healthcare professionals from Europe qualified in the field of orthotics and prosthetics, who will be based in Rashid Hospital.

“The agreement serves two purposes; it provides patients with any kind of disability with access to state-of-the-art treatment facilities as well as high-quality products including artificial limbs,” Mubarak said. “The most important benefit is that now these products will be available locally at competitive prices, ensuring patients do not need to place an order abroad. This move will cut the waiting time of a few weeks to a few days, thus providing patients who suffer from any kind of disability with easy access to high quality treatment and care.”

“At the hospital, we have one of the biggest rehabilitation services in the Emirate and this agreement helps enhance the services we already offer. As healthcare providers, it is our aim to ensure patients get the best treatment locally and this agreement provides them with convenience and ease of service,” Dr Khoori said.

“The benefit of this agreement is that now all kinds of orthotics and prosthetics will be readily accessible in Dubai for the benefit of special needs patients. We are very efficient with our after-sales service and do we provide guidance on use of products for the convenience of our patients,” Schmidt said.

Dr Suad Trebinjac, head of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Rashid Hospital said that the agreement will help a wide variety of patients. “The products will benefit patients including those with upper and lower amputations, trauma and poly-trauma patients who suffer from any kind of injuries and need orthotic appliances to support their bodily function like walking etc, patients with spinal cord and brain injuries.”

“Patients with such disabilities need long term care and support and this agreement benefits them in several ways,”

Market leader and international experts in the globally leading trade show and in the congress programme

From 16th to 18th May 2012, the entire orthopaedics and rehabilitation technology trade will meet on the Leipzig fairground. Exhibitors from Germany and abroad will present themselves in the fair halls at the globally leading trade show ORTHOPÄDIE + REHA-TECHNIK.

The comprehensive congress programme will already start on Tuesday, 15th May with top-notch speakers on various subjects. More than 300 experts will present up-to-date findings from science and practical work in seven keynotes and 36 subject blocks.

For the first time, there will be an event specifically created for trainees – the Jugend.Akademie Technische Orthopädie (youth academy for technical orthopaedics). The apprentices will be offered a comprehensive programme which is supposed to open up new perspectives and provide networking opportunities. Another new event is a special presentation with a workshop on individual rehabilitation technology.

After the successful start in 2010, the young entrepreneur meeting and the special show “Medical & healthcare supplies stores– a model for the future?” will be continued in 2012. The Campus is a joint stand and event where insitutions from science and research present themselves and the Forum International serves as an international contact network.
